About Medication-Assisted Treatment

Medication-assisted treatment is the gold standard for opioid use disorder. Decades of research consistently show that MAT — buprenorphine, methadone, or naltrexone combined with counseling — produces better outcomes than abstinence-based approaches alone. Patients on MAT are more likely to stay in treatment, less likely to relapse, less likely to overdose, and more likely to rebuild their lives.

Buprenorphine (Suboxone, Subutex, Sublocade, Brixadi) is a partial opioid agonist that prevents withdrawal and reduces cravings without producing the euphoria or dangerous respiratory depression of full agonists. It can be prescribed in a regular doctor's office and taken at home, making it one of the most accessible MAT options.

Methadone is a full opioid agonist administered through licensed Opioid Treatment Programs. It has the longest track record of any MAT medication — over 50 years — and is especially effective for patients with severe or long-term opioid dependence. Vivitrol (naltrexone) is a monthly injection that blocks opioid receptors entirely, making it a good option for patients who are already detoxed and highly motivated.

Whatever path is right for you, the first step is talking to a professional. Our 24/7 helpline connects you with addiction specialists who can help you understand your options and find a provider.
