When Subutex Is Prescribed

Subutex is buprenorphine mono — the pure buprenorphine component without the naloxone that's added to Suboxone. While Subutex has been largely replaced by Suboxone in general practice, it remains an important option in specific situations. Pregnant patients are typically prescribed Subutex or generic buprenorphine mono because the naloxone in Suboxone crosses the placenta and its effects on a developing fetus are less well-studied.

Subutex is also prescribed to patients who have allergic reactions or other adverse responses to naloxone, though these cases are rare. If you're pregnant and taking opioids, it's critical to talk to a provider who specializes in opioid use disorder treatment — abrupt detox during pregnancy carries real risks for the fetus, and maintenance therapy with buprenorphine is the standard of care.
